IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Alia,

I am writing this letter to say that, I am living next door to you and my examination is going to heppen soon. There is a humble request that kindly volume down your music because it disturbs me alot.

You just shifted here so you are unaware of the rule which is implemented on everyone living here, that you shoul be quite and calm. Everbody living here is either working or a student so loud music or other noises might disturbe individuals.

I mostly prefer to studing in the night and you play music exactly that time and it creates difficulties for me as I can not focus on my studies. I only choose night time for studies so one can disturb me but your songs do.

I would recommend to listen with low volumn so other people can rest and study calmly. If you like loud music then you could have select time when no one is here.

I would really appriciate it if you take care of this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Khan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you explain that the music is loud and played late, describe how it interrupts your night-time studying, and ask the neighbours to lower the volume or choose another time. The purpose is clear and the polite letter format is appropriate. The explanation of the impact is the strongest part, especially “I can not focus on my studies.” Some other ideas are less fully developed: the reference to a rule for everyone is vague, and suggesting a time “when no one is here” does not clearly explain how the neighbours could know that. Make the request more specific—for example, ask them to stop playing music after a particular hour—and clarify the practical action you want them to take.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the issue, explains its effect, makes a request, and closes politely. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and links such as “so” and “because” show relationships between ideas. However, some connections are repetitive or unclear. “I only choose night time for studies so one can disturb me but your songs do” is difficult to follow, and the repeated references to studying and loud music could be organised more efficiently. The sentence about the neighbourhood rule also interrupts the explanation of your personal difficulty. Group the problem and its effect together, then make the requested action a separate, direct paragraph; use clearer references and transitions to guide the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main issue, including “disturbs,” “focus,” “volume,” and “appreciate.” The tone is generally suitable for a polite complaint. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, which makes parts of the letter less clear. For example, “volume down your music” is not the natural collocation, while “quite and calm” does not express the intended idea. There are also noticeable spelling errors such as “heppen,” “Everbody,” and “appriciate.” Build a more precise set of phrases for noise complaints and check spelling and word forms carefully; this would make your meaning smoother and more professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, including “I would really appreciate it if you take care of this matter.” The reader can generally understand your message, but there are some errors in sentence construction, verb forms, and punctuation. In the opening, the comma after “that” is unnecessary, and “my examination is going to…” needs a more natural grammatical construction. “I mostly prefer to studing” has an incorrect verb pattern, while “you could have select time” does not form the intended suggestion correctly. The sentence beginning “I only choose night time…” also joins contrasting ideas awkwardly. Practise accurate verb patterns after “prefer” and modal verbs, and use full stops or clearer conjunctions to separate ideas.
