New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr and Mrs Sharma

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to bring to your attention the loud music coming from your house late at night, which has been disturbing my studies and sleep.

My name is Aashima, I have been living in Flat number 389 from last one year which is next to your flat. I am student studing Business Management. The constant loud music during day and night time affect my overall routine. As during early morning, loud spritiual songs noise coming from your house break my focus. Also, most often every weeked there is party happening at your home and the continuous vehicle horns and late night music impacted my sleep. In addition to this, my exams are starting from next week so these things not only putting stress on me, but also impacting on my overall well-being.

I am not asking you to change your lifestyle. However, I suggest you to enjoy music and parties while considering other people who are living in your surroundings. I would really appreciate it if you slow down the music system and vehicle honking while putting any restriction board under our parking areas.

I would appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Aashima

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: the late-night music and other noise are identified, the effects on your study and sleep are explained, and you request that the neighbours reduce the music and honking. The reference to exams starting next week makes the impact specific, while the polite opening and closing suit a neighbourly letter. Your request to “slow down the music system” and consider other residents gives a clear, courteous position. To strengthen the response further, explain more precisely what change you need—for example, keeping music low after a particular time—and clarify how a parking sign would address the noise. This would make the proposed action more focused and fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the problem, describe its effects, make a request, and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking phrases such as “Also,” “In addition to this,” and “However” guide the reader through your points. The overall organisation is easy to follow. Some connections could be more precise: the shift from music to “continuous vehicle horns” and then to a proposed “restriction board” is understandable but not fully explained. The phrase “As during early morning” also makes the relationship between the noise and your loss of focus less smooth. Use fewer, more natural transitions and make each proposed solution clearly connect to the specific problem it addresses.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for a complaint, including “disturbing,” “constant loud music,” “overall well-being,” and “cooperation and understanding.” These choices communicate the situation and maintain a suitably polite tone. However, several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision: “slow down the music system” is not a natural way to request lower volume, and “restriction board” is unclear in this context. There are also misspellings such as “studing,” “spritiual,” and “weeked.” Aim for more accurate, natural phrases and check spelling carefully. For example, describe the music as being “kept at a lower volume” and refer to a “notice asking residents to avoid honking” if that is what you mean.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the loud music … which has been disturbing my studies and sleep” and a conditional-style polite request, “I would really appreciate it if…”. These structures help you express the complaint tactfully. However, errors in sentence construction, verb forms, articles, and prepositions occur repeatedly and sometimes make sentences difficult to process. For instance, “My name is Aashima, I have been living…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; “from last one year” has an inaccurate time expression; and “these things not only putting stress on me” is missing a finite verb. Practise building complete sentences and checking subject–verb agreement and verb forms before submitting.
