Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Tom,
How are you? I hope you are doing well! I live to your next flat no.301. I know u recently moved in to the flat and u might be setting up all the furniture into your flat but I had issues recently that loud noice of music comes every night from your place which disturbs my sleep cycle. Therefore , i am not able to concentrate on my studies and in two weeks my exams are comming in which i have to perform well othewise my scholorship will be cancled. The noise is always after 10 pm which is my sleep time. I always get up at 4 am make make my food and then leave for school and my work simuntaniously. My schedule is very tight and i do not get any breaks in between and without my proper sleep my studies and my health is getting affected. So i would request you to wear headphones while listening to the music specially after 10 pm. I hope you will understand my concern and will cooperate with me.
Thank You
Vipul

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three points clearly: you explain that music comes from the neighbours’ flat at night, describe its effects on sleep, study, health and exam preparation, and request that they use headphones after 10 p.m. The detail about your exams in two weeks and the scholarship gives the problem a clear personal context, while the polite request suits a letter to a new neighbour. To strengthen the response further, make the opening and closing slightly more purposeful and develop the requested action with a practical alternative, such as asking them to keep the volume low if they cannot use headphones. Overall, the purpose and your position remain clear throughout, with relevant supporting details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter follows a broadly sensible order: greeting, explanation of the noise, its consequences, and a request. This makes the main message understandable. However, nearly all the content is placed in one paragraph, so the reader has little visual guidance between the problem, its effects and the proposed solution. Some links are also abrupt: “Therefore” runs directly into the previous sentence, and the shift to your daily schedule is not clearly connected to the exam difficulty. Use separate paragraphs for the problem and its impact, then the request, and connect ideas with accurate, restrained transitions. This would create clearer progression and reduce the impression of a list of details.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the situation, including “concentrate on my studies,” “sleep cycle,” “schedule is very tight” and “cooperate with me.” These phrases help explain the impact and maintain a polite tone. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “noice,” “comming,” “scholorship” and “simuntaniously,” and some expressions are unnatural, such as “I live to your next flat” and “setting up all the furniture into your flat.” Informal “u” is also unsuitable for a carefully written letter. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and consistent spelling; this will make the message smoother and more professional without changing its friendly tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts some longer sentences to explain cause and effect, for example, “I am not able to concentrate on my studies and in two weeks my exams are coming in…” This shows an effort to connect related ideas, but several sentences become difficult to follow because clauses are joined without clear punctuation or structure. There are also errors in sentence construction and grammatical patterns, such as “I live to your next flat” and “I always get up at 4 am make make my food.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly around “Therefore” and the final request. Practise separating long ideas into complete sentences, checking verb forms and prepositions, and using commas and full stops consistently.
