Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs. Ema,
I am writing this regarding the music you are playing during late night. I thought to tell about this to you, because I believe that you will be able to think about this matter and do something to help on my concerns.
I am studing hard for my masters degree final examination and meanwhile I am prepearing for IELTS examination as well. Most of time I am used to study at late evenings and night, because I am a health care professional and working full time. I believe that as well educated people you can understand how hard is a person to concentrate on studies when there is too much noice in surroundings, specially while studying to an examination.
I am really sorry to say that the loud music you are playing late night is disturbing on my studies for almost past two weeks.
I really can understand that moving to a new home is a thing you must celebrate, so that I kept waiting for whole past two weeks to talk about this matter with you by letting you to celebrrate as you desire.I do not have any possibility to study during day time and I have to sit for examinations within a short period, during next month.
As this is disturbing me on both my focus and concentration and as well as mental stability, I would have to take an action against this matter in our local council, if you are still willing to continue this. So that, could you please make an action or proper arrangement to enjoy yourselves, during day time, or at night in a certain time without interupting your neigbours. I really appreciate your kind understanding.
I hope you would discuss with your family and do the needful.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Sewwandi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points: you explain that late-night music is disturbing your studies, describe the difficulty of balancing full-time work with examinations, and ask the neighbours to change when they celebrate or play music. The reason for writing is clear, and the reference to waiting two weeks before raising the issue helps explain your approach. The request is also specific, including keeping the music to daytime or limiting it at night. To make the letter more fully developed, clarify the practical impact on sleep as well as concentration, since sleep is part of the situation, and make the requested arrangement more precise. The warning about contacting the local council is understandable, but a calmer, more diplomatic phrasing would better suit a first request to new neighbours.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a recognisable structure: an opening, paragraphs explaining your circumstances and the problem, a request, and a polite closing. The ideas generally progress from your studies to the effect of the music and then to the action you want. You also use linking expressions such as “meanwhile,” “because,” and “as.” However, some connections are awkward or repetitive, particularly “as this is disturbing me on both my focus and concentration and as well as mental stability,” which makes the request harder to follow. Several sentences contain multiple ideas that would be clearer if separated. Use paragraphing to give the problem, its effects, and your proposed solution distinct emphasis, and choose simpler transitions where the relationship between ideas is already clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the situation, including “final examination,” “concentrate,” “local council,” and “proper arrangement,” and the reader can understand the main concern. There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “I really appreciate your kind understanding.” However, noticeable spelling errors (“studing,” “prepearing,” “noice,” “interupting”) and unnatural word combinations reduce accuracy and sometimes make the letter less fluent. Phrases such as “help on my concerns,” “disturbing on my studies,” and “do the needful” are not natural choices in this context. Aim for accurate, conventional collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make your vocabulary more effective without requiring more complicated words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “when,” and “if,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, complex constructions are often faulty, as in “I believe that as well educated people you can understand how hard is a person to concentrate,” where the word order and clause structure need revision. Other examples include “I am used to study” and “I would have to take an action,” which show problems with verb patterns and articles. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention: the long sentence beginning “As this is disturbing me…” is difficult to process, and spacing around punctuation is inconsistent. Practise building accurate shorter sentences first, then combine them with controlled subordinate clauses.
