IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Brown,

I hope you have been doing well lately. I am writing this letter to bring your attention toward the problem I face due to music at night.

As far as problem is concerned, I have my final exams next week which required a lot of concentration. Nevertheless, the music played by you every late night makes it challenging to focus on my studies. This not only afffecting my studies but also disturbing my sleep.

In addition, I and my family feel very unconfortable because of loud music. Quiteness at night is essential for one to rest or study.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could limit the time of playing music as it is the rule of our apprtment building that no one can play loud music after 10 P.M. Other than that, I request you to keep the music volume in control so that other members of the society will not get disturbed. I hope you will consider my request promptly and understand our viewpont as well.

Your Sincerly,

Karan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points: it explains that late-night music is the problem, says your exams require concentration and that your sleep is disturbed, and asks the neighbours to reduce the playing time and volume. The request is clear and appropriately polite, especially in “It would be greatly appreciated if you could…” The explanation of the impact is relevant, though the effect on your family is stated generally rather than illustrated, and the requested action could be more specific—for example, asking them to stop playing music after 10 p.m. You also refer to the building rule, which gives a useful reason for the request. Overall, the purpose and position remain clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence: greeting and purpose, explanation of the problem, its effects, and a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and connectors such as “Nevertheless” and “In addition” make the relationships between ideas clear. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. However, some linking is slightly mechanical, and the transition from your own study and sleep difficulties to your family’s discomfort could be smoother. The phrase “As far as problem is concerned” also makes the opening of that paragraph less natural and clear. To strengthen progression, use simpler, more direct transitions and ensure each paragraph develops one main point before moving to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to a polite complaint, including “bring your attention,” “concentration,” “limit,” and “consider my request.” The tone is generally suitable for writing to a neighbour, and the reader can understand the central message. However, the range and control are uneven: several expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “bring your attention toward,” “keep the music volume in control,” and “understand our viewpoint.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “afffecting,” “unconfortable,” “apprtment,” and “viewpont,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations such as “draw your attention to the issue,” “keep the volume down,” and “understand our concerns,” and proofread carefully for spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes some complex structures, particularly “It would be greatly appreciated if you could…” and the clause beginning “so that,” showing an attempt to vary sentence forms. The main ideas are generally understandable, but errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction limit accuracy. For example, “the music played by you every late night makes” is awkwardly structured, while “This not only afffecting my studies” needs a finite verb, such as “This is not only affecting my studies.” In “As far as problem is concerned,” an article is missing. The closing, “Your Sincerly,” also has an incorrect form. Review basic clause structure and articles, then check each sentence for a complete, correctly formed verb.
