IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Sharma,

I hope you are all set in your new house?. I am your neighbour miss Shri and live right next to your house.

I wanted to adress a problem that, recently l am facing a lot of trouble because of loud music at late night. I am a full time student and I am doing preparation for my Health care assistant exam.

I studied all year long however, I can not concentrate on my studies when you play loud music late at night. Secondly, it is affecting my sleep as well. I can not sleep when music is on. Lack of sleep cause me so many problems during the day. I feel sleep during my class and I feel less productive.

I would like to request you if you can avoid playing loud music at late night or if you really enjoy your music please keep it low, so it won't afftect your neighbours. I hope you do not mind and try to understand my problem.

I really appreciate it.

Your Sincerely,

Raj

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points: it identifies late-night loud music, explains its effects on studying and sleep, and asks the neighbours to turn it down or avoid playing it late. The purpose and polite request remain clear throughout. The explanation is supported with relevant details, such as feeling sleepy in class and being less productive, which helps the reader understand the impact. To make the response more fully developed, specify a practical arrangement—for example, asking for quiet after a particular time—and clarify whether the music is affecting you on particular nights or regularly. This would make the requested action more precise while retaining the considerate tone.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The message follows a sensible sequence: greeting and introduction, description of the problem, its consequences, and a request. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and links such as “Secondly” and “however” guide the reader through the explanation. The progression is generally clear, though some connections feel mechanical or are not punctuated effectively; for instance, “I studied all year long however” would read more smoothly with clearer punctuation and a more direct link to the effect of the music. The closing also feels abrupt after the request. Use a wider range of natural transitions and connect related points more smoothly to make the letter flow with less effort.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the situation and its effects, with relevant phrases such as “loud music,” “concentrate on my studies,” and “less productive.” The tone is appropriately polite, particularly in “I would like to request” and “I really appreciate it.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling or word-choice errors reduce accuracy: “adress,” “afftect,” and “I feel sleep” are examples. Some phrases are also unnatural, including “doing preparation for” and “at late night.” Build a more precise range for describing noise and its impact, and check spelling and common collocations so the message sounds more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter communicates its meaning, but grammatical control is uneven. Most sentences use straightforward patterns, with some attempts to combine ideas, such as “I studied all year long however, I can not concentrate…” Errors include the question punctuation in “new house?,” the sentence fragment-like opening “I hope you are all set,” and agreement in “Lack of sleep cause me so many problems.” The conditional request, “if you can avoid playing loud music,” is understandable, but the sentence is long and would benefit from clearer clause structure and punctuation. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, sentence boundaries, and varied complex forms; this will make the request easier to read while preserving its courteous tone.
