IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear XYZ,

I am writing this letter to complain about the loud music which you play usually when you return from work at night.

I am a student currently enrolled in a masters course and am preparing for my final exams.I usually spend the day at the library and come back later in the veening. But unfortunately , upon my arrival , i alwys notice that you ahve a small gathering of people , almost everyday. Not only that , the music and chatter is too loud. Although I try to put on some earplugs and ignore it, but i am unable to do that everyday for those long hours.

I am a migrane patient and loud noises for prolonged period of time affect my health subsequently. I try to take care of my health but if the sleep is not comfortable, I end up havingheadache throughout the day which affects not only my health but also my syllabus tcoverage time table.

That said, I earnestly require you to please lower down the volume of your music and if possible please have gatherings during th weekends until unless necessary. Along with this , i would love to have a heads up from your end if there is a party or expected guests at your place so that I accomodate myslef accordngly.

I hope you understand my situation. Looking forward to hearing from you

Best Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three required points clearly: it identifies late-night music and gatherings, explains the effects on your sleep, migraines and exam preparation, and asks the neighbours to reduce the volume, hold gatherings at weekends where possible, and give advance notice. The personal details make the request persuasive, particularly the link between poor sleep and difficulty studying. The tone is generally considerate while still making the problem clear. To make the response even more complete, clarify the specific hours when the noise is most disruptive and state a practical request, such as keeping music low after a particular time. The request to hold gatherings at weekends could also be framed more flexibly, since weekends may not resolve late-night noise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is arranged in a clear sequence: the opening states the purpose, the next paragraphs explain the circumstances and consequences, and the final paragraph makes requests before closing politely. This gives the letter a logical progression and makes the main message easy to follow. Connectors such as “Although,” “That said,” and “Along with this” help signal relationships between ideas. However, some linking is less smooth: “Although I try to put on some earplugs and ignore it, but…” combines two contrasting structures, and “That said” does not clearly introduce the practical requests. Use simpler transitions where the relationship is direct, and keep each paragraph focused on one function to make the cohesion more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a neighbour complaint, including “prolonged period,” “earnestly,” “gathering,” and “accommodate,” and the reader can understand the situation throughout. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “I am writing this letter to complain” and “I hope you understand my situation.” Some choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “lower down the volume,” “syllabus coverage time table,” and “heads up from your end” do not sound fully natural in this context. Spelling slips such as “veening,” “migrane,” and “accomodate” also reduce accuracy. Choose conventional collocations and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter attempts a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional request (“if possible…”) and a contrast clause beginning “Although.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation. For example, “Although I try… but I am unable” uses two contrasting markers together; “the music and chatter is too loud” has a subject–verb agreement problem; and “if the sleep is not comfortable” uses an unnecessary article. Several sentences also run together without appropriate spacing or punctuation, as in “exams.I usually” and “hearing from you” without a final full stop. Build accuracy by checking each sentence’s subject and verb, and separate clauses with appropriate punctuation.
