IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear neighbours,

I know you are having fun at your new place. I am also very happy to have funny people around. However, late night music and parties are causing disturbance in my peace therefore I am writing this to bring your attention to my concern.

I am actually preparing for my mid-terms and these are really important for my internship. I usually wake up early in the morning for my prepration but from frew days I am not be able to sleep on time because of unwanted noise from your place. Thus, i am unable to maintain my energy and concentare on my studies in the morning.

I would like you to turn the volume down after nine pm. Additionally, I would recommend you to use earpods if you like to listen music this much.Excessive noises can can be controled while having good times.

I hope you understand my situation, I would really appreciate if you cooprate with it.

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points in the prompt: you identify late-night music and parties, explain that they disrupt sleep and make it harder to prepare for important mid-terms, and request that the neighbours lower the volume after nine. The purpose and your polite position are clear throughout, and the detail about waking early helps explain the impact. The request to use earphones adds a practical alternative. To make the response more fully developed, explain more precisely how the noise affects your exam preparation or sleep, and make the requested change especially clear—for example, asking them to keep music low or stop it after a specific time. Overall, the relevant ideas are clear and supported, though some are expressed generally.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you open by introducing the concern, explain its effect on your studies, make a request, and close politely. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “However,” “Thus,” and “Additionally” help connect the ideas. The relationship between the noise, lost sleep, and reduced concentration is understandable. At times, however, the connections feel slightly mechanical, particularly where “therefore” and “Thus” introduce consequences in close succession. The final request paragraph also moves quickly from lowering the volume to using earphones and controlling noise. Smoother transitions and a more deliberate connection between these suggestions would make the progression feel more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the situation and its effects, including “disturbance,” “preparation,” “concentrate,” and “excessive noises.” The tone is generally appropriate for a polite neighbourly letter. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “funny people” for friendly neighbours, “disturbance in my peace,” and “listen music this much.” Spelling errors in “prepration,” “frew,” “concentare,” and “cooprate,” along with “controled,” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Focus on common collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, “disrupt my sleep” is more natural than “disturbance in my peace.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast introduced by “However” and the reason-and-result relationship in “because of unwanted noise… Thus, I am unable…”. The overall meaning remains understandable. However, errors occur in verb forms, sentence construction, and punctuation. For example, “from frew days I am not be able to sleep” needs a correct time expression and verb form, such as “for a few days I have not been able to sleep.” The sentence beginning “I would really appreciate if” is missing “it” before “if,” and “I would recommend you to use” has an awkward grammatical pattern. Capitalisation of “I” and spacing after sentence punctuation also need attention. More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the letter.
