Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, there is a growing debate about whether zoos shouldcontinue to exists or to be closed permanantly. some people believes that keeping animals is captavity is unnecessary and cruel. However i disagree with the idea of zoos should be closed because they played an important role in protecting wildlife, educating people and saving endangered species. Firstly, zoos provide protection and care for animals that are at risk of extinction. Many wild life animals are losing their natural habitats because of deforestation, climate changes and illegal hunting. Well-managed zoos provide asafe environment where endangered species can receive proper food, medical treatment and protection. Forexample, some zoos participate in breeding programmes to increase the population of endangered animals and help reintroduce them into the wild. Secondly, Zoos are important educational centres. Many students and adults do not have the opportunity to see wild animals in their natural habitat. visiting zoos allows people to learn about different species, their behaviour and the importance of protecting the environment. This experiancecan encourage people to become more responsibletowards nature and wild life. in conclusion, although keeping animals in captivity can sometimes be harmful, istreongly believe that zoos should not be completely closed. instead, poorly managedzoos should be improves, while responsible zoos should continue their conservation andeducational activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you disagree with closing zoos, and you give two relevant reasons—wildlife conservation and public education. The examples of breeding programmes and learning about animal behaviour help support these points. This meets the task well, but the ideas are not developed equally or in much depth: the conservation point explains how zoos can help, while the education point is mostly asserted, with no specific example of how learning changes people’s actions. The concession that captivity can be harmful is useful, but it would be stronger if you explained when or why this happens and how responsible zoos address it. The response is 45 words below the required minimum, so there is limited space to develop these ideas fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, two body sections present separate reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “in conclusion” make the structure easy to follow. This is a solid organisational foundation. To make the progression more fully developed, use the body paragraphs to explain each claim step by step and connect examples explicitly to the argument—for instance, show how breeding programmes contribute to species survival. Some transitions are abrupt, particularly the move from the education point to the conclusion. Consistent paragraph breaks and careful punctuation around linking phrases would also make the organisation easier to read.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “endangered species,” “natural habitats,” “deforestation,” “breeding programmes,” and “conservation.” These terms help communicate the main arguments clearly, and some choices are appropriate to an IELTS discussion essay. However, spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “captavity,” “experiance,” and “wild life.” There are also awkward expressions such as “animals is captivity” and “responsibletowards nature.” Aim to check spelling carefully and choose natural collocations; for example, animals are “kept in captivity,” and people can become “more responsible towards the natural world.” More precise vocabulary for animal welfare and conservation would also help you explain the opposing view and your response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause beginning “because” and a sentence explaining that habitats are being lost “because of” several causes. Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, articles, and punctuation weaken control. For example, “some people believes” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “the idea of zoos should be closed” does not form a correct clause after “idea.” The opening also runs several sentences together, and the conclusion contains a comma splice in “harmful, is strongly believe.” Practise accurate clause patterns and sentence boundaries, then proofread for capital letters and punctuation. This would make your varied sentence attempts more consistently clear.
