Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is stated that there is no need to keep animals in zoos; therefore, these should be permanently shut down. I completely agree with this perspective and will explain the reasons and suitable examples to support my argument in the forthcoming paragraphs.
One of the primary reasons why I think zoos should be closed is to make animals independent. When animals are kept in a small isolated area with artificial trees, they feel they are caged, and are not free. Unlike other animals who are free in forests, and live their lives without any restrictions, these animals are kept in cages for whole time which might make them sick and sometimes can lead to the extinction of some species. For instance, in Chandigarh, in past times, there were some news about the critical health issues of animals who were kept in zoos because they had lost the hope in life, and were stressed due to the caged lifestyle.
Additionally, not only should these zoos be banned for the independence of the wildlife, but they also should be closed to reduce the incidents which happen in the zoos related to the security of the viewers. In spite of quite a sufficient protection, visitors still sometimes are attacked by the animals, costing their lives. To exemplify, should these zoos be closed, there will be no risk to people's live in the urban areas as the dangerous wildlife always stay in the forests.
In conclusion, aforementioned are the reasons, such as freedom of fauna and elimination of risks to the human life associated with the visits to zoos, justifying why zoos should be permanently shut down. Hence, I am in the favour of closing zoos.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response clearly addresses the prompt and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding animal welfare and human safety are relevant and logically extended. However, the development is somewhat limited; the example regarding Chandigarh is vague, and the argument about 'making animals independent' could be more nuanced, as simply closing zoos does not automatically grant animals independence in the wild. While the task is fully addressed, the depth of analysis could be improved to reach a higher band by exploring the educational or conservation roles of zoos and refuting them more thoroughly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One of the primary reasons', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is clear, though the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a more natural, sophisticated feel.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'forthcoming', 'fauna', and 'extinction'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'for whole time' (should be 'all the time') and 'costing their lives' (should be 'costing them their lives'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'there were some news' (should be 'there was some news'), 'people's live' (should be 'people's lives'), and 'I am in the favour of' (should be 'I am in favour of'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are noticeable. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and pluralization.
