Student answer (Band 7.0)

Due to technological advancements, debate over zoos has become increasingly relevant in today’s fast-paced, evolving world. Some people believe that zoos should be closed, as we no longer need them. However, I disagree with the statement because zoos can help people see and experience live animals safely, and they can help keep breeds alive.

To commence, the most compelling factor is that experiencing and see them very closely. Given that urbanisation leads to detrimental effects on animals’ habitats, they move far away from the city area to survive. As a result, to educate children, schools can show animal videos, which children can take as an entertaining movie, creating a barrier for children to experience them. Therefore, having zoos and taking children there can have a tremendous impact on educating not only children, but also other people. For example, in India, government schools regularly arrange a school with students visit to the nearest zoos, helping them to teach about the significance of animals in ecology.

Secondly, another aspect to strengthen the statement is that zoos can help animals to keep animals alive. As zoos provide crucial facilities where animals can be kept under the surveillance of animal specialists, it becomes easy for the health specialists to track animals’ health daily and provide necessary treatment before animals’ health becomes worse. As a consequence, they can help the last breed to survive and increase their population. In India, for instance, the Government of Gujarat allowed animal doctors to keep rhinos in zoos under surveillance, leading to an increasing population of rhinos.

To conclude, although closing zoos can benefit to a certain extent, I strongly believe keeping zoos can help in myriad ways for people to be aware of the nature diversity and its importance in ecology, and it helps animals to raise their population and survive along with other animals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding education and conservation are relevant and supported by examples. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the second paragraph where the focus on 'keeping animals alive' lacks depth. While the position is clear, the explanation of why zoos are necessary could be more nuanced to reach a higher band. The examples provided, such as the school visits and rhino conservation in India, are pertinent and help to support the main ideas effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence', 'Secondly', and 'As a consequence' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'experiencing and see them very closely'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally clear, though the connection between sentences could be smoother to enhance the overall readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'detrimental', 'surveillance', and 'myriad', which is positive. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'keep breeds alive' instead of 'preserve species' or 'nature diversity' instead of 'biodiversity'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the argument. A wider range of topic-specific vocabulary would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'experiencing and see them' (parallelism error), 'arrange a school with students visit' (awkward syntax), and 'benefit to a certain extent' (missing object). Punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence structure often feels slightly strained. The majority of sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band for accuracy.
