Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is widely debated that zoos should be closed as animals do not need to be kept in these places anymore. I firmly disagree with this view because zoos are the potential mediums to look after animals in various ways.

One of the primary reasons to keep animal parks open is to educate the generation about the importance of wildlife. For example, people living in urban areas do not often connect with the nature and their only source of knowledge is books and the internet. By visiting zoos, they can feel the presence of different species and their contribution to the world. Zoo guides provide enough knowledge about the natural habitants, eating habits of the animals kept there.

In addition, animal sanctuaries are considered beneficial in taking care of endangered species. These animals are brought here for their protection, moreover, are bred to increase their population. They are kept under supervision until they are fully grown to survive in the wild. For example, by using this technique the world has seen an incredible growth in the numbers of giant pandas.

However, there is an understandable reason of not keeping animals in zoos because of their improper care in such places. While this situation does not occur in each zoo. Although zoos have several tourists each day, they sometimes are not able meet the demand of animals living there through food or medical services. This problem can be addressed by the government by not only improving the welfare system of the places where animals are kept but also by funding them whenever they are in need.

In conclusion, closing zoos will ultimately affect the wildlife as it provides significant care to animals and protect them from becoming extinct. I disagree with the given statement due to the various benefits of the zoos on our planet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments regarding education and conservation are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the mention of giant pandas. You also acknowledge the opposing view, which adds balance to your response. To reach a higher band, ensure that your counter-argument paragraph is as fully developed as your supporting paragraphs. While you mention that zoos sometimes fail to meet animal needs, you could expand on how this impacts the overall debate about whether they should be closed or reformed. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Your essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'For example' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. To improve, try to vary your linking words further, as some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, ensure that referencing is always clear; for instance, in the third paragraph, the phrase 'these places' could be more explicitly linked to the previous mention of zoos to improve the flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'endangered species', 'natural habitats', and 'welfare system' are used correctly and appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'potential mediums' to describe zoos, which is slightly unnatural. You also have some minor collocation errors, such as 'connect with the nature' (should be 'connect with nature'). Expanding your use of less common lexical items and focusing on natural collocations will help you move into the higher band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'there is an understandable reason of not keeping' (should be 'reason for not keeping') and 'they sometimes are not able meet' (should be 'are not able to meet'). Additionally, the sentence 'While this situation does not occur in each zoo' is a fragment that should be connected to the following sentence. Improving your control over these minor errors will enhance your overall accuracy.
