Student answer (Band 6.0)

Zoos plays an important role to preserve our wildlife species. It is stated that zoos should be closed, and we do not require zoos to kept animal inside. I completely disagree with this statement and my view is justified in ensuing paragraphs.

One of the main reasons is that, zoos play a significant role in preservation of wildlife species and protect endangered animals. Nowadays, wildlife animals are reducing in number day by day, so it is our responsibility to take care of them. Zoos are one of part of them and allow access to information about different wildlife creatures to a new generation. Therefore, zoos are crucial for new generations and our eco-system to save natural habitats. Moreover, it also enhances economy by increasing tourism. For instance, zoo attracts visitors to see different wildlife animals resulting increases income to government. In short, zoos provide knowledge with enjoyment at a same time.

On the other hand, some people belief that zoos should be closed because animals have their rights to live a life without restrictions. Humans cannot keep them in cage for their personal benefits. For example, many wildlife animals are kept inside a cage in city areas, instead of forests. It imposes restrictions on animals to explore nature and live at their desired place.

To conclude, although keeping animals in zoos feels restricted and inappropriate, I believe it can help to preserve wildlife for youngsters and provides better care for endangered species. Ultimately, zoos not only provide benefits to animals, but also for the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments are relevant, though some points, such as the economic benefit of zoos, are somewhat under-developed. The essay provides a balanced view by acknowledging the opposing argument before refuting it in the conclusion. To reach a higher band, the student should provide more specific, concrete examples rather than general statements. For instance, instead of saying 'zoo attracts visitors', mentioning a specific type of conservation program or a well-known zoo would strengthen the argument. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main reasons', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there is occasional awkwardness in referencing, such as 'Zoos are one of part of them'. Improving the flow between sentences and using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'preservation' and 'endangered species'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'zoos play a significant role in preservation' (missing article) and 'zoos provide knowledge with enjoyment at a same time' (incorrect preposition and article). To improve, the student should focus on learning collocations and ensuring the correct usage of articles and prepositions with academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Zoos plays', 'zoo attracts'), incorrect verb forms ('require zoos to kept animal'), and missing articles ('in cage', 'at a same time'). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammar, particularly subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency, while continuing to experiment with more complex sentence structures.
