Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people believe that animals should not be kept in zoos; therefore, zoos are not necessary and should be closed. I totally disagree with this point of view because well-managed zoos always contribute to education and help with wildlife conservation.

Firstly, Zoos provide a simulated natural habitat that offers animals shelter, food, and security. It plays a vital role in conserving the endangered species. Moreover, researchers can study animal behavior, reproduction, and health, providing essential information for wildlife protection. For example, breeding programs help to reintroduce the endangered species, which not only helps to reproduce these animals, but also helps scientists to understand their chances of survival.

Secondly, zoos play an important role in education. People, including children, come to zoos, look at the animals, and feel more connected to them, which makes them curious to learn more about their species and motivates them to take steps to save these animals by following policies introduced by the higher authorities. Moreover, by observing these animals, students can learn more about the needs of wildlife conservation and become more engaged in upholding welfare standards. To illustrate, students who learn about wildlife and illegal hunting can become more aware of these reductions.

However, many zoos are not properly maintained, and animals there face problems; they should be maintained or closed for the animals' safety. These zoos don't provide proper places for the animals, and they feel unsafe in confined spaces, and they are at risk of infections.

To conclude, although zoos are very informative, educational and attractive places, some do not maintain welfare standards. The government should take strict action and implement policies that adhere to proper regulations governing zoos.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The main body paragraphs provide relevant arguments regarding conservation and education, which are well-supported by examples. You also acknowledge the counter-argument regarding poor welfare standards, which adds balance to your response. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are more specific; for instance, instead of 'higher authorities', you could mention 'international wildlife organizations' or 'government environmental agencies'. Overall, the response addresses all parts of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two supporting body paragraphs, a counter-argument paragraph, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'To illustrate', and 'However' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. To improve, try to vary your linking words slightly more, as some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear, and the relationship between sentences is generally easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'simulated natural habitat', 'endangered species', and 'welfare standards'. There are occasional instances where word choice could be more natural, such as 'become more aware of these reductions', which is slightly unclear in context. You generally avoid repetition and use vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic task. To reach a higher band, incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions related to environmental policy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, though there are minor slips, such as 'It plays a vital role' (referring to 'Zoos', which is plural, so 'They play' would be correct) and 'reproduce these animals' (where 'breed' or 'propagate' might be more accurate). Punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that pronouns consistently refer back to their intended nouns.
