Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that animals should not be kept in zoos and should be safely relocated to forests. Although relocating to the forests will provide freedom, I believe animals will benefit more from being kept in zoos because this way we can protect species that are on the brink of extinction and boost overall economic growth. I disagree with this statement and provide further explanation in the upcoming paragraphs.

To begin with, wildlife parks play a significant role in protecting endangered species that are on the brink of extinction. In other words, providing proper shelter will not only protect their reproductive growth but also provide them with veterinary treatment facilities that can be beneficial for illness. Moreover, preserving those animals will help children learn a great deal at the zoo by observing real animal behaviour and their lifestyles. For example, in Singapore, thousands of tourists visit the zoo every year to learn and collect evidence of wildlife theory. Therefore, zoos play an important role in preserving wild animals.

In addition, zoos generate a substantial amount of revenue for the country, contributing to economic growth. To expound, wildlife parks and desert safaris have become famous tourist spots that not only boost the economy but also generate employment for local shopkeepers by selling products near zoo areas and earning revenue. For instance, every year, hundreds of small businesses go to the flea market and earn good revenue by selling local handmade crafts to tourists.

In conclusion, although animals should be given freedom to live in their habitats, preserving them in zoos protects them from extinction and contributes to the overall economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding species preservation and economic benefits are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the Singapore zoo and local flea markets. While the ideas are clear, the development could be slightly more nuanced; for instance, the link between 'wildlife theory' and the zoo experience is a bit vague. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the question, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'To expound' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. The progression of ideas is smooth, and referencing is generally clear. The structure is consistent and supports the overall argument well, fitting the criteria for a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and generally appropriate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'endangered species', 'veterinary treatment', and 'economic growth'. There are occasional instances where word choice could be more precise, such as 'collect evidence of wildlife theory', which sounds slightly unnatural. However, the range is adequate to convey ideas clearly, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. This performance aligns with the Band 6.5-7.0 range, leaning towards 6.5 due to some slightly awkward collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are infrequent and do not impede understanding. For example, 'providing proper shelter will not only protect their reproductive growth but also provide them with veterinary treatment' is a well-constructed complex sentence. While there is a good level of control, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited, which prevents it from reaching the higher bands. The punctuation is generally correct, supporting the overall clarity of the writing.
