Student answer (Band 6.5)

Animals plays a vital role in our environment and makes the nature more beautiful. Animals in zoos are no longer needed so as a result it should be closed. I totally disagree with the statement. The facts regarding this will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

There are number of advantages of keeping the animals in zoos. The first and foremost is zoos are the only place where we can see different kinds of animals and get knowledge about them. In case zoos gets closed so as a result, The coming generation will never get any chance to enjoy the nature as they will never come to know how the real animals look like. Consequently, knowledge will be effected. Secondly, zoos become the house of animals and till the time they are there, management take good care of them by providing them food and water. So, with the closure of zoos they might suffer from deprivation of food and water.

On the flip side, for some animals zoos environment is not suitable. For instance Elephants and Gorillas. This means that elephants have a habbit of walking many kilometers but in zoo they cannot do this. On the other hand Gorilla need large spaces, natural environment and social relationships but while in zoos they are deprived of this. Because of these reasons I think that zoos are no longer needed for some animals as zoos are not their natural habitat.

In conclusion, I would like to say that zoos should not be closed as they are home to animals and great source of learning. The animals who are not suitable to zoo environment only those ones should be free so that they can live peacefully in their natural environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed the prompt by taking a clear position against closing all zoos, while acknowledging the nuance that some species may not thrive in captivity. Your ideas are relevant, such as the educational value of zoos and the welfare concerns for specific animals like elephants. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'knowledge will be effected' is vague and could be expanded with more specific examples of conservation or research. To improve, ensure that your arguments are fully extended with concrete evidence or logical consequences rather than just stating them briefly. Overall, you have responded to all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use transition signals such as 'The first and foremost', 'Consequently', and 'On the flip side' to guide the reader. However, some cohesive devices are used mechanically or slightly incorrectly, such as 'In case zoos gets closed so as a result'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally repetitive. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the flow between sentences is smoother and less reliant on simple connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'deprivation', 'natural habitat', and 'environment'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'knowledge will be effected' (should be 'affected') and 'habbit' (spelling error). You also rely on some basic phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and ensure correct spelling. For example, instead of 'make the nature more beautiful', consider 'enhance the aesthetic value of the natural world'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'Animals plays' and 'zoos gets closed', as well as punctuation and article usage errors (e.g., 'The coming generation'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Proofreading for these specific, common errors would significantly enhance the clarity of your writing.
