Student answer (Band 7.0)

Conserving animals in the natural habitat has always been a significant unit of life because of the imperative nature animals possess in the whole globe at all times. However, whether the idea of zoos for animals is still required or not, is not less than a contentious issue. I wholeheartedly disagree with the notion of closing zoos as they are still needed which will be discussed in the subsequent writing.

There is no denying the fact that maintanence of zoos is not upto the mark these days, which sometimes force individuals to ponder about the abandoning of these places, but if zoos would be permanently closed, whole habitat will turn upside down. This can be articulated in the way that animals will be on roads due to the shortage of green spaces such as forests leading to a complete destruction of mankind. Not only the damage it may cause to humans, the normal cycle of life would ultimately come to an end. Moreover, the sight of a balanced world will no longer be the same and a new urbanized animal home would be ubiquitiously there.

Among all the losses to wildlife, what stands out the most is the danger to endangered species. It is quite crucial to protect them and the way zoos are keeping them is commendable. If these species are kept well, captive breeding programmes can be performed and there are high chances of arrival of those species to wildlife again. Apart from this, zoos play a considerable role in educational purposes which cannot be catered to otherwise in a proper manner. Nevertheless, few solid changes can be brought in the overall mechanism to protect animals in zoos, ranging from proper nutrition of animals to almost nature-alike environment.

To encapsulate, while there are reasons to the argument of closing zoos, the disagreement to the statement carries more weight. Consequently, rather than banning zoos, more stern initiatives ought to be taken to ameliorate the concept and services of these animal keeping spaces with the collaborative efforts of public and higher authorities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position throughout: the writer explicitly disagrees with the idea of closing zoos. Main ideas are extended and supported, such as the discussion surrounding captive breeding programmes, endangered species protection, and the educational value of zoos. For instance, the writer notes that 'zoos play a considerable role in educational purposes which cannot be catered to otherwise.' While some supporting arguments, like animals turning upside down on roads and leading to the destruction of mankind, lean towards over-generalisation, the overall task is well fulfilled and the position is consistently maintained.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organised, presenting a clear overall progression from the introduction to body paragraphs discussing the consequences of closing zoos and the benefits of keeping them, followed by a concise conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. A variety of cohesive devices is employed, such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'To encapsulate', though referencing and transitions are occasionally slightly mechanical, as seen with 'This can be articulated in the way that'. Overall, cohesion is managed well and the text is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, using less common items such as 'contentious issue', 'captive breeding programmes', 'ubiquitiously', and 'ameliorate'. There are occasional inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'maintanence of zoos is not upto the mark' and 'almost nature-alike environment'. Spelling is generally accurate, though minor errors like 'maintanence' and 'upto' occur. The vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings and supports the development of the topic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ('if zoos would be permanently closed, whole habitat will turn upside down') and relative clauses. There is a mix of error-free sentences alongside some grammatical inaccuracies, particularly with verb tense agreement in conditionals and missing articles (e.g., 'the whole globe', 'the abandoning'). However, punctuation and grammar mistakes are infrequent enough that they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the arguments presented.
