Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is hotly debated that zoos should be closed as there is no need to keep them in. I disagree with this notion due to extinction of species, and rise in economic growth.

To commence with the view of disagreement, that zoos plays an integeral role in preserving species which are about to extinct. In other words, the greed of man to earn money has been increased a lot. So, they are killing animals, and these species are about to disappear forever. For example, in India, the survey conducted by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) showed that cheetahs has been almost disappeard because greedy people are hunting and selling them for earning money. Hence, it results in the imbalance of the ecosystem.

Furthermore, zoos help in increasing the economic growth of the country. To explain this, zoos attracts tourism which indirectly creates the job for the people who manage those area like cleaning, taking care of animals, providing proper food and shelter. Moreover, there are some shops and restaurants for tourists. For example, African Lion Safari in Guelph is a place where the authorities have kept variety of species of wild animals ,and a significant number of people come everyday to visit and watch them. They are not only paying the entry fees but also creating job opportunities for several people. Therfore, it benefits in the economic growth of the company.

In conclusion, keeping zoos is not only helping to prevent the extinction of some species but it is also contributing the economic development of the nation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt directly, taking a clear stance against closing zoos. The ideas presented, such as wildlife preservation and economic growth through tourism, are relevant and supported with explanations and examples (e.g., the Central Bureau of Investigation survey and the African Lion Safari). However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or general, such as the claim regarding the economic growth of the 'company' rather than the country at the end of the second body paragraph. Nevertheless, the main parts of the task are adequately covered, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases like 'To commence with the view of disagreement' are awkward and unnatural. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'those area' (should be plural) and a misuse of cohesive links like 'Therfore' and spelling errors in connectors. Progression is visible, but the mechanical nature of the cohesive devices places this response securely at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common items such as 'integeral' (misspelled), 'preservation', and 'ecosystem'. However, there are noticeable word-choice errors, collocational slips, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, including 'disappeard', 'attracts tourism' (plural/singular mismatch with 'zoos attracts'), and referring to the nation's economy as the 'company's' economy in the conclusion. While these lexical errors do not impede overall communication, they restrict the score to a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as 'zoos plays' (subject-verb agreement), 'cheetahs has been almost disappeard', and missing articles or pluralisation issues like 'creates the job' and 'variety of species'. Punctuation is also faulty in places, such as the comma splice before 'and a significant number'. Because errors occur frequently across complex structures while still allowing the reader to understand the meaning, a Band 5.5 is appropriate.
