IELTS Writing Task 2 question
We no longer need to have animals kept in zoos, so zoos should be closed.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Zoos have been an integral part of my childhood and while growing up they were also a part of my fondest memories with my family. I would want my childrfen to experience the same as well so I do not agree with zoo closures.
Foremost the animals kept inside zoos are those who need extra care and support while growing up. They lack particular set of survival skills so leaving them in the wilderness would be equal to giving them a slow death. For example a monkey that was not strong enough to crawl on its own, or a baby zebra that could not walk minutes after being born. All these animals are assigned specific nurses and each one is given proper care and nourishment. Vets are also always present in case of any unforeseen accident.
Secondly all these animals are put in their respective sanctuaries with the same species as of their families. This gives them a sense of belonging and being around friends. Nowadays different simulations have been introduced inside zoos, which replicate the natural habitats of the animals. For example a cold room full of ice and snow for the polar bears, tropical trees and moist swamp like area for monkeys. This encourages animals to accept their natural home while being under extra care.
Next zoos can also boost a countries tourism and economy by show casing their native birds and animals.
Finally I would like to say that animals deserve the same level of love and respect whether they are in your homes, zoos or in the wilderness.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the opening: you disagree with closing zoos, and you give several relevant reasons, including care for vulnerable animals, habitat simulations, and tourism. The examples of polar bears and monkeys help illustrate your point. This meets the task well, but the support is uneven: the claim that zoo animals lack survival skills is broad, and the tourism point is only briefly stated. The conclusion expresses respect for animals but does not directly reinforce why zoos should remain open. To strengthen the response, explain how zoos contribute to conservation or education, and qualify claims so they apply to well-managed zoos rather than all animals in captivity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable progression from your personal position to reasons and a concluding statement. Paragraphing separates the main points, and signposts such as “Foremost,” “Secondly,” and “Finally” make the sequence easy to follow. This is a coherent overall arrangement, though the linking can feel mechanical because several points are introduced in a list-like way. Some connections between claims could also be clearer: the discussion of habitat simulations moves from animals’ sense of belonging to accepting a natural home without fully explaining that relationship. Use a wider range of transitions to show cause, contrast, or consequence, and develop each paragraph around one clearly connected line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “wilderness,” “sanctuaries,” “natural habitats,” “nourishment,” and “tourism.” These choices help communicate your ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also some inaccurate or awkward expressions, such as “same species as of their families,” “show casing,” and “a slow death,” which reduce precision and naturalness. Spelling errors such as “childrfen” and “countries” in “a countries tourism” also affect accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling and word forms during proofreading. For example, describe animals as being housed with members of their own species, and refer to a country’s tourism industry.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the opening clause beginning “while growing up” and the conditional idea “leaving them in the wilderness would be equal to…”. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. For instance, “they lack particular set of survival skills” needs an article, and “a monkey that was not strong enough to crawl on its own, or a baby zebra…” is a sentence fragment rather than a complete example sentence. There are also run-on sentences where a full stop or conjunction is needed, as in “slow death. For example”. Work on articles, complete sentence structure, and punctuation around examples to make the writing more controlled.
