Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, zoos are popular places where people can observe and learn about different species of animals. I disagree that zoo should be closed because zoos still play an important role in protecting endangered animals and educating the public.

To commence with, zoos protect endangered species. some animals are at the risk of extinction because of hunting, loss of inhabitant and climate change. Zoo helps them by providing shelter, food and social atmosphere as they are surrounded by other related animals. In addition to this, breeding programmes also help them to increase their population. For example, Zoo participated in breeding programmes for endangered animals such as tigers and gaint elephants. Therefore, endangered species and animals should kept in zoo and it should not be closed.

Another major reason for not closing zoos are that it educate the people and provide employment opportunities. Through these zoos, people get educated and learn about different animals, species and their natural habitats. Children can develop an understanding of wildlife conservation. This knowledge may encourage people to protect animals and the environment.

To elaborate on this, school trips to zoos can teach children about endangered species and the importance of biodiversity.

In conclusion, I believe that zoos not only play a paramount role in protecting endangered animals and species but also help society develop a better understanding of wildlife.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you disagree with closing zoos, and the conclusion restates this view. You give two relevant reasons—protecting endangered species and educating the public—and support them with examples such as breeding programmes and school trips. However, the ideas are not developed equally: the education point is explained, while the claim that zoos provide employment is mentioned but not supported. The example about tigers and elephants is also quite general, so a specific programme or outcome would make the argument more convincing. The response is 25 words below the required minimum, so it needs further development to meet the task fully. Explain how zoos protect animals and address the concern that captivity may harm them.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from conservation to education is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To commence with,” “In addition to this,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This organisation is effective, though some linking is mechanical and the second body paragraph introduces employment without developing it, which interrupts the focus on education. The phrase “To elaborate on this” repeats the education point rather than adding a distinct step in the argument. To strengthen progression, make each paragraph’s main idea explicit, develop it with explanation and evidence, and use references such as “these programmes” to connect sentences more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “endangered species,” “breeding programmes,” “wildlife conservation,” and “biodiversity.” These terms suit the subject and help communicate your main points. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “paramount role,” although this sounds overstated in the conclusion. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear: “loss of inhabitant” does not express the intended idea, and “social atmosphere” is not a natural description of suitable conditions for animals. Spelling errors such as “gaint” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural combinations and check spelling; for example, describe habitat loss and a suitable social environment, rather than translating ideas word by word.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex structures, including the reason clause “because zoos still play an important role” and the conditional “This knowledge may encourage people to protect animals.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Zoo helps them” needs an article and plural agreement (“Zoos help them”), while “endangered species and animals should kept” is missing “be.” In “Another major reason … are that it educate,” the subject and verb do not agree. Capitalisation after a full stop is also inconsistent. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and passive forms, then proofread each sentence; these corrections would make your argument more controlled without changing its content.
