Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table compares the age groups of European male and female and their average hours spent on the Internet.

Overall, it is clear that the people who were around 16 to 20 years old spend most of their time on internet, while older people who were 51+ didn't care much about Internet.

Looking first at age groups of male and female of age 16 to 20, they spend most of their time on internet which was around 19 hours, whereas age groups of 11 and 15 were second most with average of 8 hours. Furthermore, the average time spent by adult male and female of age 21 to 25 was 7 hours and 5 hours.

Moreover, average hours spend by both male and female of age group 26 to 30 was 4 hours, while more mature groups of male and female who were around 31 to 50 years old spend their time on Internet was 3 to 4 hours on average.Lastly, 51+ age groups of male spend 2 hours of their time on the internet, whereas female spend 3 hours on Internet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main pattern accurately: the 16–20 group records the highest figures for both sexes, and the 51+ group the lowest. You also report most of the table’s values correctly, including the equal four-hour figures for ages 26–30 and the small female advantage among those aged 31–50 and 51+. This gives the response a clear, relevant overview. However, the overview’s claim that older people “didn't care much” is an unsupported interpretation of internet use; describe the figures rather than users’ attitudes. Some comparisons are also less fully developed: for example, the peak is 19 hours for males and 18 for females, but this difference is not made explicit in the overview. A more precise summary of the overall decline after age 16–20 would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the age groups. Sequencing phrases such as “Looking first,” “Moreover,” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the progression, and the figures are generally grouped in a sensible order. This is coherent overall, though some linking is mechanical and the paragraphing could make the comparison clearer. The long sentence beginning “Looking first at age groups…” combines several points, while the final sentence runs into the preceding one without a space after the full stop. Grouping the peak ages together, then the middle and oldest groups, and using clearer references to male and female figures would create smoother progression and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the table’s subject, including “average hours,” “age groups,” and “spent on the Internet.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise. “Spend most of their time” overstates what the table shows, since it reports average hours rather than a share of all time, and “didn't care much” assigns an attitude not shown by the data. Phrases such as “more mature groups” and repeated use of “Internet” also make the description less precise. Aim for neutral, data-focused language and vary reporting verbs and comparison phrases. More accurate collocations would make the response sound more controlled and appropriate for an academic summary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including comparisons with “while” and “whereas,” and the main figures remain understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “people … spend” shifts from the past-tense framing “was around 19 hours,” while “average hours spend” should use a past participle in this context. The phrase “age groups of male and female of age 16 to 20” is also awkwardly constructed, and “female spend” lacks agreement. The final sentence needs a full stop, and “on average.Lastly” needs spacing and punctuation. Check tense consistency and build shorter, complete comparison sentences; these changes would improve accuracy while preserving your range.
