IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
This table provides data about the number of hours spent on the internet for the average European and classifies it according to gender and age group.
Overall, it is noticeable that both men and women tend to spend less time on the internet as they grow older. Another thing worth noting, is that before the age of 25 males pass more time on the internet than females whereas after that stage women take over the lead.
In their early teenage years, males spend around eight hours surfing the internet. This is 33% more than the females in the same age group who spend an average of 6 hours. Going into their late teens, male and female figures get closer to each other and show a noticeable jump with 19 hours for males and 18 for females . The numbers significantly drop as they reach adulthood to become 7 hours for men and 5 for women . Between the ages of 26 and 30 both males and females spend around 4 hours on the internet. As they get over 31, the females numbers overtake the males for the first time with them getting respectively 4 and 3 hours of internet time. For men over the age of 51, they only spend 2 hours browsing while women of the same age average around 3 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response effectively addresses the task by summarizing the main features and making relevant comparisons. You have identified key trends, such as the general decline in internet usage with age and the crossover point between genders. The data is accurately reported, and the overview provides a clear summary of the main patterns. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific age groups mentioned in the prompt, and perhaps provide a more nuanced comparison of the 'late teens' peak versus the steady decline in adulthood. Overall, the response is well-focused and covers all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information effectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'as they get over', and 'in the same age group' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the general trend to specific age-based comparisons. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'the females numbers' could be more smoothly integrated into the sentence structure to avoid minor awkwardness.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'take over the lead', 'surfing the internet', and 'browsing' are used appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'pass more time' (should be 'spend more time') and 'the females numbers' (should be 'the females' numbers' or 'the figures for females'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated synonyms for 'spend' or 'drop' would enhance the lexical variety and precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over basic grammar, and your meaning is always clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the females numbers overtake the males' (should be 'the females' numbers overtake the males'') and 'getting respectively 4 and 3 hours' (the placement of 'respectively' is slightly awkward). Punctuation is generally accurate, though there is an unnecessary comma in the second paragraph after 'noting'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which supports a solid band 7 performance.
