Student answer (Band 6.5)
The table illustrates the average hours spent on internet by European people of different age groups.
Overall, males recorded the highest figures while females recorded the lowest. Additionally, some age groups recorded similar figures.
Males aged 16-20 recorded 19 which was the highest number of internet users. This was followed by 11-15 years and 21-25 years, each recording 8 and 7 respectively. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the data and makes relevant comparisons. You successfully identified the highest and lowest age groups for both genders. However, the report lacks a clear overview of the trends. While you mention that males recorded higher figures, you could have improved the task achievement by highlighting the general trend that internet usage decreases as age increases. Additionally, the data points are presented as raw numbers without explicitly stating they represent 'average hours', which is a key part of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the units of measurement are clearly linked to the data throughout the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from male data to female data. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'On the other hand', and 'In comparison' to link your points. However, the use of some cohesive devices is slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the transition between the male and female paragraphs could be more sophisticated to better highlight the comparative aspect of the task. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the readability of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey the information, such as 'illustrates', 'recorded', and 'registered'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'recorded' and 'followed by'. To improve, try to vary your verbs and nouns (e.g., 'peaked at', 'accounted for', 'figures', 'data', 'statistics'). There are also some minor issues with word choice, such as 'filing' and 'filled', which are not the most natural collocations for reporting statistical data. Using more precise academic vocabulary would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'average hours spent on internet' should be 'the internet', and 'highest number of internet users' is inaccurate as the table shows 'average hours', not the number of users. There are also minor errors in preposition use and article omission. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and using articles correctly, while also attempting a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
