IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The table provides the information about the average time spent on the internet by the citizens of Europe in terms of six different age groups.
Overall, it can be seen that the majority of hours spent on the internet are by teenagers. It has also been observed that as age increases, a lesser amount of time is spent on the internet.
However, for the age group between 11 and 15 years, a total of 14 hours were spent on the internet, 8 by the males and 6 by the females. Most of the hours are spent by the group of age between 16 and 20, 19 hours and 18 hours, respectively. Looking to the categories between 21 and 25, an average of 7 hours and 5 hours were spent by men and women, respectively, which is less than the first group.
On the other hand, for individuals aged between 26 and 30, equal hours were spent by males and females, 4 hours each. For the age of 31 and above, a reversal trend has been seen, more hours are spent by women and fewer by men. People of the age group between 31 and 50, women spent an average of 4 hours and an hour less by men. People above age 51 spent only 5 hours in total, women spent one hour more than men.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully identifies the main features and provides a clear overview. You have selected relevant data points to support your summary, such as the peak usage in the 16-20 age group and the general downward trend. However, the reporting of data is occasionally slightly inaccurate or confusing; for instance, stating '19 hours and 18 hours' for the 16-20 group is clear, but the phrasing 'less than the first group' for the 21-25 category is slightly ambiguous. Additionally, the description of the 31-50 age group as 'an hour less by men' is grammatically awkward. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well, though more precise comparisons would elevate the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by age categories. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different trends. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is mostly effective, though the flow could be improved by varying the sentence structure more significantly to avoid repetitive patterns when listing the data for each age group.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reversal trend', 'citizens', and 'categories'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is generally successful. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'a reversal trend has been seen' (a reversal of the trend) and 'an hour less by men' (which is slightly unidiomatic). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but to reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a slightly more sophisticated range of reporting verbs and nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are error-free, there are occasional grammatical slips, such as 'the majority of hours spent on the internet are by teenagers' (which is slightly awkward) and 'Looking to the categories between 21 and 25' (which should be 'Looking at'). The phrase 'an hour less by men' lacks a verb to be grammatically complete. Despite these minor errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the meaning is never obscured. To improve, focus on ensuring that all comparative clauses are complete and grammatically sound.
