Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 8.0)

The table provides data on the average time European individuals from different age brackets spend on the internet.

Overall, men and women aged between 16-20 spend the highest number of hours online. Men below the age of 25 use the internet more; whereas women above the age of 50 spend more time on online platforms compared to men.

Between the ages of 11-25 men use the internet more often than women. Young men and women belonging to this age group spend an average of 8 and 6 hours browsing online respectively . However, those aged between 16-20 have the highest average screentime; men spend 19 hours on the internet whereas women spend 18 hours. After the age of 20, the average time spent on online activites decreases for both genders.

In the age group of 21-25, men browse online for 7 hours compared to women with 5 hours. Both genders with ages between 26-30 spend the same amount of time on digital platforms. Past the age of 25, women spend a higher mean time on the internet compared to men. In the age bracket of 31-50, women allocate an average of 4 hours to the internet compared to men who spend around 3 hours. Both genders spend the least amount of time online in the age group of 51 years or older; 3 hours spent digitally by women and 2 hours spent browsing by men.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all age groups and made relevant comparisons between genders. The data is accurately reported, and the structure allows for easy comparison. To reach a higher band, ensure that the 'overview' paragraph is more distinct and perhaps highlights the most significant trend or contrast more explicitly. For example, noting that the 16-20 age group represents a clear peak for both genders would strengthen the summary. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from an introduction to an overview, followed by detailed body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'however', 'whereas', and 'in the age group of' effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different age brackets. The flow of information is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. To improve further, you could vary your cohesive devices slightly more to avoid repetitive sentence structures, but the current level of cohesion is already quite strong.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information precisely, using terms like 'age brackets', 'screentime', 'digital platforms', and 'allocate'. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is generally appropriate for an academic report. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items that would push the score into the 8.0+ range. However, the language used is natural and effectively communicates the data without any ambiguity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

You show good control over a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your use of punctuation is generally accurate. There are minor slips, such as the unnecessary space before the period in 'respectively .' and the slight awkwardness in '3 hours spent digitally by women'. However, these are rare and do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or more advanced subordinating clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
