IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The chart illustrates the number of hours; specific to European people, who spend their time on internet starting from age 11 till age 51 and above. It includes the usegae of internet for both males and females.
To comprehend the data in a few lines, the chart shows how at younger age male population is more prone to using internet than females and after the ages of 30 and onwards women are using the internet more compared to male population in the Europe region.
To dive further in the details of the chart, lets start from the early ages 11-15 years, in which male scored 2 more compared to 6 of females. It surges very high to 19 vs 18 in the ages 16-20, where female comes 1 short to male population. starting 21 -25 age we can see the gap remains same as ages 11-15 , from 7-5 but starting from ages 26-30, we can see that chart balances out as both males and females using the internet comes at the same number ie. 4-4. Moving further, we can see the decline in the number of males in terms of internet usage and a surge in the female population from ages 31-50 and onwards. However the difference remain minor and no darastic changes can be seen in the chart.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers the main features of the data and makes relevant comparisons. You successfully identified the key trends, such as the shift in internet usage between genders across different age groups. However, the reporting of specific figures is occasionally confusing or inaccurate (e.g., 'male scored 2 more compared to 6 of females' is unclear). To improve, ensure that data points are clearly linked to the specific age groups and categories they represent. The overview is present but could be more concise and integrated. Overall, the response addresses the requirements of the task well, providing a clear summary of the provided information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the data. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To comprehend the data' and 'Moving further', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'To dive further in the details of the chart'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal structure of the final paragraph could be improved by grouping the data more logically rather than listing it chronologically in a way that feels slightly repetitive.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'population', 'surges', and 'decline'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'usegae' (spelling), 'male scored 2 more', and 'no darastic changes'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your report. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'a marginal difference', rather than relying on simpler descriptive phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including punctuation issues (e.g., 'hours; specific to European people, who'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('female comes 1 short to male population'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the data. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions when describing statistical data. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while ensuring accuracy will help elevate your score in this criterion.
