Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to adequately report the data provided in the table. Instead of summarizing key trends and making comparisons based on the figures, the text relies on subjective speculation about why people use the internet (e.g., 'struggling for their future'). There is no mention of specific data points or numerical trends, which is essential for an Academic Task 1 response. The information provided is vague and does not address the prompt's requirement to summarize the main features of the table. Consequently, the response does not meet the requirements for a higher band score as it lacks an objective analysis of the provided information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay lacks a clear logical progression. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the ideas within the paragraphs are disjointed and often repetitive. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as the transition 'Meanwhile' which does not effectively link the preceding and following ideas. The referencing is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the writer's train of thought. To improve, the writer should focus on grouping related data points together and using clear, logical transitions between sentences to guide the reader through the information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'using' and 'internet'. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect word choices, such as 'get old they started keep distraction' and 'not using like they have used in past time'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information with precision or flexibility. To reach a higher band, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary to include more academic and descriptive terms related to data analysis, such as 'fluctuate', 'decline', 'proportion', and 'significant'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'children start using internet even after 50 years they still user'), tense usage (e.g., 'when they had did jobs'), and sentence structure. The writing consists mostly of simple sentences with limited attempts at complex structures, and those attempts are often faulty. Punctuation is also inconsistent. The student should focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses, and improving the accuracy of articles and prepositions.
