IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The table illustrates the average number of hours spent on the internet per week by European males and females across six age groups.

Overall, internet usage rose sharply among teenagers before declining steadily with age for both genders, although females began spending more time online than males once they passed the age of 30.

Internet usage was broadly similar for younger and older age groups, but usage peaked dramatically among teenagers and young adults. Among 11 to 15-year-olds, males spent slightly more time online than females, at 8 and 6 hours respectively. This gap widened slightly in the 16 to 20 age bracket, where usage for both genders reached its highest point, with males spending 19 hours online and females 18 hours.

From the age of 21 onwards, internet usage declined steadily for both sexes. Hours fell to 7 for males and 5 for females in the 21 to 25 bracket, before converging at an identical 4 hours for the 26 to 30 age group. Beyond the age of 30, however, this pattern reversed slightly: females began to spend marginally more time online than males, a trend that continued into the oldest age bracket. Among those aged 31 to 50, females spent 4 hours online compared to just 3 for males, and this gap persisted among the over-51s, where females and males averaged 3 and 2 hours respectively.
