Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the data, such as the peak usage in the 16-20 age group and the decline in older groups. However, the reporting is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview. The summary provided in the second paragraph is slightly confusing, as it describes the 16-20 group as 'enormous' without clearly contrasting it with the lower figures of other groups. Additionally, the data interpretation is occasionally imprecise, such as referring to the 26-30 group as 'less users' rather than describing the actual hours spent. To improve, ensure that comparisons are more explicit and that the overview highlights the most significant trends rather than just listing data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'after that enormous figure we found' or 'to which 7 male and 5 female'. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the transition between the description of the 21-25 age group and the 26-30 group. While the paragraphing is logical, the internal cohesion within paragraphs needs more variety and smoother linking phrases to achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. Phrases like 'spent their time on the internet of which 8 are male' are grammatically awkward and lexically limited. There is a reliance on basic verbs like 'spent' and 'using', and some word choices are inaccurate, such as 'less users' instead of 'lower usage'. To improve, incorporate more varied vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable', or 'a marginal decrease'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'the proportions of the European people of various age groups spent their average hours' (incorrect verb form/structure) and 'which they are 3 male and 4 female' (unnecessary relative pronoun). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. To improve, focus on sentence construction and ensure that complex structures are used accurately rather than just attempted.
