Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates the average amount of time different age groups consume the internet in Europe.

Overall, people aged 16-20 reported the highest amount of time spent on their devices while elderly people, aged 51 and over show significantly lower number. On average, male consumers show higher numbers of hours of internet usage, although in older groups females represent just a slightly higher figure.

In detail, the first age group is 11-15 which reports 8 hours of internet usage by males and 6 hours by females. The numbers soar in the age group of 16-20, with 19 hours by men and 18 hours by women.

A downward trend is reported after the age group 21-25. 7 hours is used by male individuals aged 21- 25 and only 5 by females in the respective age group. In the age group 26-30, both males and females reported 4 hours of online activity. In contrast to other age groups, elder ones report higher number in female usage, representing 4 hours and 3 hours by females (31-50) and 2 hours by males and 3 hours by females in the age group of 51 and over.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the main trends. You successfully identified the peak usage in the 16-20 age group and noted the general downward trend. However, the report could be improved by grouping data more effectively rather than listing every single figure. For instance, the comparison between age groups could be more analytical. While you mention the gender difference, the description of the 31-50 and 51+ groups is slightly confusing in its phrasing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the specific data points clearly. Overall, the main features are highlighted, but the presentation of data lacks a high level of analytical synthesis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In detail', and 'In contrast to' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing within the final paragraph is a bit repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow between the specific data points in the final paragraph could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that comparisons are integrated more naturally would help elevate the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'soar', 'downward trend', and 'respective age group'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'consume the internet' (which is not a standard collocation; 'spend time on the internet' or 'internet usage' is better) and 'elder ones' (which is slightly informal; 'older age groups' is preferred). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Expanding your range of reporting verbs and descriptive adjectives would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'show significantly lower number' (should be 'a significantly lower number') and 'elder ones report higher number' (should be 'a higher number'). Additionally, the phrasing '3 hours by females (31-50) and 2 hours by males and 3 hours by females in the age group of 51 and over' is syntactically cluttered and difficult to parse. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more consistent control over articles and sentence structure complexity.
