IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table illustrates the average usage of internet in Europe amongst different age groups, from 11 years old to over 51 years old.
Overall, usage of internet can be seen having a declining trend over the age groups. Except for 16 to 20 which can be seen having double the usage than the previous group. Males amongst all of the groups spent the most amount of time on the internet, except for 31 to 50 and 51+.
The groups of 11 to 25 spent most of their time on the internet, males in the group of 11 to 15 had an average time of 8 hours while females had average of 6 hours, the group of 21 till 25 only spent an hour less on the internet. Meanwhile, 16 to 20 group spent more than double the internet than 11 to 15 years old group, with an average of 19 hours for males and 18 hours for females.
The other three groups only had a peak of 4 hours and a low of 2 hours. For females the average remained the same for 26 to 30 and 31 to 50 with 4 hours and males had a decrease of an hour. However, males older than 51 years old used the internet on average for only 2 hours and 3 hours for the females.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all age groups and identifies key trends, such as the overall decline in usage and the peak in the 16-20 age bracket. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, stating the 16-20 group spent 'double the internet' compared to the 11-15 group is a slight exaggeration based on the provided figures. Additionally, the description of the 11-25 group as a single block is confusing, as the data is presented in distinct brackets. To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons are mathematically precise and that the overview clearly highlights the most significant trends without misinterpreting the data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, moving from an overview to specific age-group comparisons. Cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'However', and 'The other three groups' are used to link ideas. However, the progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the transition between the 11-25 age range and the subsequent specific group data. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall readability and logical progression of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'declining trend', 'average usage', and 'peak'. However, there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'spent more than double the internet', which is not a standard collocation. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, relying on basic descriptors. To improve, you should incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends and data, such as 'fluctuation', 'proportion', or 'marginal decrease', rather than relying on simple verbs like 'had' or 'spent'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'usage of internet can be seen having a declining trend' (awkward passive construction) and '16 to 20 group spent more than double the internet' (missing noun/preposition). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are occasionally inconsistent. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences and refining the use of articles and prepositions would significantly improve the grammatical accuracy.
