IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The table illustrates the average number of hours spent on the Internet by European males and females in different age groups.

People aged 16–20 had the highest Internet usage, at 19 hours for males and 18 hours for females per week. The figures then fell considerably among those aged 21–25, with males spending 7 hours and females 5 hours online. Among the youngest group, aged 11–15, males and females spent 8 and 6 hours, respectively.

Internet usage was considerably lower among the older age groups. Both males and females aged 26–30 spent 4 hours online. In the 31–50 group, females used the Internet slightly more than males, at 4 hours compared with 3 hours. Finally, people aged 51 and above recorded the lowest figures, with males spending 2 hours and females 3 hours only.

Overall, it is clear that people aged 16–20 spent the most time on the Internet, while those aged 51 and over spent the least. In general, males used the Internet for longer than females in the younger age groups, whereas females recorded slightly higher figures among older people.
