Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers the main features of the data well, identifying key trends and making relevant comparisons between age groups and genders. The overview is clear and highlights the primary differences, such as the crossover point between male and female internet usage. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise data points to support the descriptions. For instance, while the text mentions a 'downward trend', it could more explicitly contrast the specific figures for the 26-30 age group versus the 51+ group to better illustrate the scale of the decline. Overall, the response successfully addresses the requirements of the prompt by summarizing the information effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on males and females respectively. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On the contrary', 'While', and 'Hence' are used to link sentences and ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'that of the females' is repeated, which makes the writing feel a bit repetitive. Improving the variety of cohesive links and avoiding redundant phrasing would elevate the flow of the response to a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey the necessary information clearly. The student uses terms like 'consumption', 'illustrates', and 'downward trend' appropriately. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data interpretation, such as 'fluctuate', 'peak', 'plateau', or 'marginal'. Additionally, there are minor issues with word choice, such as 'the Europe' (should be 'Europe') and 'spends the highest time' (should be 'spends the most time').
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'The units used is average hours' should be 'The units used are average hours', and 'males between 16 to 20 years of age spends' should be 'males... spend'. There are also minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'in the Europe'. Despite these errors, the grammatical mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles in academic writing.
