Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides a clear overview of the main trends and selects relevant data points to support the description. However, the analysis is somewhat marred by inaccurate reporting of the data. For instance, the text claims late teenagers spend '19hrs' and '18hrs' on the internet, which is a significant misinterpretation of the provided data. Additionally, the term 'web incompatible' is an inappropriate way to describe lower usage hours. While the main features are identified, the accuracy of the data reporting is a key issue that prevents a higher score. The response covers all age groups, but the lack of precision in data extraction limits the effectiveness of the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow a chronological age progression. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'moreover', and 'subsequently' are used to link ideas. However, the use of some cohesive devices is mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'In further context' or 'In adult era'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different age groups, which helps the reader follow the progression of the data. The overall flow is generally clear, though the transition between sentences could be smoother to improve the logical progression.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'web incompatible', 'digital presence', and 'screentime' (used as a countable noun). The phrase 'incline seems to sustain' is also misused, as an incline refers to an upward slope, whereas the data shows a decline. While the student attempts to use a range of vocabulary, the inaccuracies in collocation and word choice occasionally impede the clarity of the report. A more careful selection of descriptive verbs and nouns related to data trends is needed.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'late teenager have growing trend' (missing article and subject-verb agreement), 'early teenage year' (pluralization error), and '4hrs to both categories' (preposition error). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with capitalization and spacing. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of these errors is noticeable. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement, correct use of articles, and ensuring that complex sentence structures are grammatically sound.
