Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table illustrates the information about the average time spent on the internet by both genders of Europe of various age groups.

Overall, it is evident that people in the age slab of 16 to 20 spend most of their time on internet, whereas people above 51 of their age, are least bothered about using the internet. However, the time spent on internet for both the genders is similar for the age group of 26 to 30.

In males, 19 hours are spent by the people of the age between 16 to 20 who are highly fascinated by the internet, followed by men of the age between 11-15 and 21-35 years, with actively spend time of 8 and 7 hours.

Moreover, women who are between the age group of 26 to 10 and 31 to 50 years, devote only 4 hours a day. Females of age group 11 to 15 years use 6 hours of internet daily which is double the time used by females of above 51 years of age.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response provides a summary of the main features, but the data reporting is inconsistent and contains inaccuracies. For instance, you mention '26 to 10' as an age group, which is illogical, and the data points cited (e.g., '19 hours' for males 16-20) do not clearly align with standard interpretations of such charts. While you attempt to identify trends, the lack of precision in data reporting and the inclusion of confusing age ranges hinder the overall clarity. To improve, ensure you carefully transcribe figures from the table and group data logically to highlight key comparisons rather than listing isolated, potentially incorrect statistics.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall' and 'Moreover', but the internal logic within paragraphs is weak. For example, the transition between discussing male and female data is abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to track which age group or gender is being discussed. Improving the use of linking phrases and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. You use some repetitive phrasing, such as 'age group' and 'time spent on internet'. There are also instances of awkward word choices, such as 'age slab' and 'least bothered', which are not appropriate for an academic report. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied and precise vocabulary related to data analysis, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', or 'significant disparity', and avoid informal or imprecise expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'people above 51 of their age' (awkward phrasing) and 'with actively spend time of 8 and 7 hours' (incorrect verb form). There are also issues with preposition usage and article omission. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors suggests a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of sentence construction. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct prepositional phrases will help improve your accuracy.
