Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table shows how many hours per week European men and women of different ages use the Internet.

Overall, young people spent the most time online. As people got older, the time they spent on the Internet went down. In younger groups men used the Internet more, but in older groups women used it more.

The 16 to 20 age group spent the most time online. Males in this group used the Internet for 19 hours a week and females for 18 hours. This was the highest number in the table. Teenagers aged 11 to 15 also used the Internet a lot, with 8 hours for boys and 6 hours for girls.

After the age of 20, the time dropped a lot. People aged 21 to 25 spent 7 hours for men and 5 hours for women. People aged 26 to 30 spent 4 hours for both men and women.

In the oldest groups, women spent more time than men. Women aged 31 to 50 spent 4 hours and women 51+ spent 3 hours. Men in these groups spent 3 hours and 2 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all requirements of the task. You have identified the main features, such as the overall downward trend in internet usage as age increases and the gender-based crossover in usage patterns. The data is accurately reported, and you have made relevant comparisons between age groups and genders. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide a more analytical overview that synthesises the data rather than just listing figures. For example, explicitly contrasting the peak usage in the youngest group with the significant decline in the oldest group would strengthen the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by age categories. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'People aged... spent...'). You could improve the flow by using a wider variety of linking words and referencing techniques to connect sentences more fluidly. For instance, instead of starting every sentence with 'People aged...', you could use pronouns or relative clauses to link information more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey the information clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'age group' and 'online'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. To improve, try to incorporate more varied verbs and adverbs to describe trends, such as 'plummeted', 'fluctuated', or 'remained stable'. Additionally, avoid repeating the same sentence structures when reporting data; using synonyms for 'spent' or 'used' would demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally accurate and communication is never impeded, there is a lack of variety in your sentence construction. Most sentences follow a similar 'Subject + Verb + Object' pattern. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more complex structures, such as passive voice (e.g., 'The highest usage was recorded among...') or subordinate clauses (e.g., 'While younger men spent more time online, this trend reversed in older age groups').
