IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The table provides data on the mean hours spent on the social media by the residents of Europe of distinct age groups.
Overall, youngsters underwent a consistent and robust upward trend due to maximum usage of the internet facilities and older people spent least time on the multi media. However, children and adults experienced minor fluctuations throughout the given timeframe. On the other hand boys followed an upward trend with maximum utilisation.
Initially, offsprings from 11 to 15 years old devoted considerable hours to the Internet which was 8 and 6 hours for male and female respectively. Furthermore, young ones from 16 to 20 years old mirrored this trend because boys allocated 19 hours and girls used internet for 18 hours. Moreover, adults aged 21 to 25 allotted 7 and 5 hours by men and women respectively.
In addition, both sex spent 4 hours uniformly on social media platforms which were aged form 26 to 30. Moving further, older ones from 31 to 50 used internet for 3 hours and female spent 4 hours. Ultimately, 51 and above men devoted 2 hours and 3 hours by old ladies to the internet services.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the table, but there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the text claims 11-15-year-olds spent 8 and 6 hours, whereas the table shows 18 and 16. Furthermore, the description of trends is inconsistent with the data; the text mentions 'minor fluctuations' for children, but the table shows a clear decline as age increases. The summary of 'youngsters' having a 'robust upward trend' is also factually incorrect based on the provided figures. While the response attempts to report the main features, the misinterpretation of the data significantly impacts the accuracy of the task completion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or inappropriate. For example, 'Moving further' and 'Ultimately' are used to transition between age groups, but these do not always reflect the logical progression of the data. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'both sex spent 4 hours uniformly... which were aged form 26 to 30', which is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Overall, while there is a clear attempt at paragraphing, the cohesion within and between sentences is inconsistent.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision. There are several instances of inappropriate word choice, such as 'offsprings' to refer to children, 'young ones' for teenagers, and 'old ladies' for women over 51, which are not suitable for an academic report. The term 'multi media' is also used incorrectly to refer to the Internet. While the student attempts to use a variety of terms, the frequent misuse of vocabulary and awkward collocations limit the clarity of the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('both sex spent'), incorrect preposition usage ('aged form 26 to 30'), and awkward phrasing ('allotted 7 and 5 hours by men and women'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. The student demonstrates an attempt to use complex structures, but the lack of accuracy in these attempts prevents a higher score.
