Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the data, such as the highest usage in the 16-20 age group and the lowest in the 51+ category. However, the report is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview. The data presentation is repetitive, listing figures without sufficient synthesis or meaningful comparison. While the main trends are identified, the lack of sophisticated grouping and the tendency to simply list numbers rather than highlighting significant patterns limits the depth of the response. To improve, focus on grouping age ranges that show similar trends and ensure the overview clearly captures the most striking differences between the groups.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between sentences is often abrupt, and the use of cohesive devices is very limited. For example, phrases like 'Lately years' and 'this age also' are used incorrectly, which disrupts the flow of information. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between genders. To achieve a higher band, you should use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'conversely', 'whereas') to connect ideas more fluidly and ensure that each paragraph has a clear central theme.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple verbs like 'use' and 'spend'. There is a lack of variety in how the data is described, and some word choices are unnatural or incorrect, such as 'Lately years' instead of 'In later years' or 'highly spent time'. The range of vocabulary is just adequate to convey the basic message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. You should aim to incorporate more varied verbs and nouns related to data reporting, such as 'fluctuate', 'peak', 'decline', and 'proportion'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'young people are spent', 'all group male highly spent'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward sentence structures. The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. There are very few complex sentences, and those attempted often contain errors. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically the correct use of passive voice for data description and ensuring consistent verb tenses. Proofreading for basic errors like missing articles and incorrect pluralisation would also be beneficial.
