IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The table gives information about the average number of hours spent on the Internet by European males and females in six different age groups.
Overall, people aged 16–20 spent the most time on the Internet, while those aged 51 and over spent the least. Internet use generally decreased with age. Males also spent more time online than females in most age groups.
Looking at the figures in detail, males aged 16–20 spent the highest amount of time online, at 19 hours per week, followed closely by females in the same age group, at 18 hours. Among 11–15-year-olds, males used the Internet for 8 hours, compared with 6 hours for females. The figures then fell to 7 and 5 hours respectively among those aged 21–25.
For people aged 26–30, both genders spent 4 hours online. Interestingly, females aged 31–50 spent slightly more time than males, at 4 hours compared with 3. A similar pattern can be seen among those aged 51+, with females spending 3 hours and males 2
Overall, people aged 16–20 spent the most time on the Internet, while those aged 51 and over spent the least. Internet use generally decreased with age, and males usually spent slightly more time online than females.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview and selected key features, such as the peak usage in the 16–20 age group and the general downward trend. Comparisons are made throughout, such as noting the differences between genders in the 11–15 and 31–50 age brackets. The information is accurate and well-supported by the data provided. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview is distinct and does not repeat the same information found in the conclusion, as the final paragraph here is largely redundant.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a specific focus, moving from the overview to detailed comparisons. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking at the figures in detail', 'followed closely by', and 'a similar pattern' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the final paragraph is unnecessary as it repeats the overview provided in the introduction. Removing this repetition would improve the overall flow and conciseness of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Terms like 'highest amount of time', 'generally decreased', and 'respectively' are used accurately. The vocabulary is appropriate for an academic report. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'spent time' or 'used the Internet' to avoid slight repetition. For example, using 'devoted to' or 'logged on for' would demonstrate a more flexible range of lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'Internet use generally decreased with age, and males usually spent slightly more time online than females.' Punctuation is generally accurate, although there is a missing period at the very end of the text. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the few minor slips do not impede communication. The control over comparative structures is particularly strong.
