IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The table compares the average hours per week spent on the Internet by European males and females across six different age groups.

Overall, Internet usage was highest among young adults aged 16-20 for both genders, and it declined steadily with age. Males generally spent slightly more time online than females in the younger age brackets, while the difference was minimal or reversed in older groups.

For the younger population, those aged 16-20 recorded the peak usage, with males spending 19 hours and females 18 hours per week. The 11-15 age group also had relatively high usage, at 8 hours for males and 6 hours for females. The 21-25 group saw a sharp drop to 7 hours for males and 5 hours for females.

In contrast, Internet use fell considerably among older Europeans. Both males and females aged 26-30 spent 4 hours per week online. Usage continued to decline to 3 hours for males and 4 hours for females in the 31-50 bracket, and was lowest among those aged 51 and over, at 2 hours for males and 3 hours for females.

Thus, there was a clear trend of decreasing Internet use as age increased.
