Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the data, but the analysis is inconsistent. While you identify the peak usage for the 16-20 age group, the overall summary is inaccurate; for example, you state that males spent more hours than females, but the data shows this is not true across all age groups. Furthermore, the description of the data is sometimes confusing, such as mentioning 'smartphone' and 'social media', which are not explicitly labelled in the provided prompt. To improve, ensure you accurately interpret the data provided and avoid introducing external assumptions. The overview should clearly highlight the most significant trends rather than just stating a general observation that is not fully supported by the figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. Phrases like 'in detail' and 'like wise' are used, but the logical flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when comparing male and female data points. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of linking words more naturally and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as grouping age ranges or comparing trends more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. You rely on repetitive phrasing such as 'spent' and 'hours'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'European masses' and 'given to smartphone', which sound unnatural in an academic context. To improve, try to use a broader range of synonyms and more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'allocated', 'devoted', or 'fluctuated'. Additionally, ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate for a formal report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include incorrect article usage ('the internet'), subject-verb agreement errors ('male spent'), and awkward sentence construction ('which seeks majority number of hours then other age groups'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structure and proofreading for common errors like missing articles and incorrect prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help raise your score.
