Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response identifies the main features, such as the peak usage in the 16-20 age group and the lowest usage among those aged 51+. However, the reporting of data is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, the student refers to '6 people' or '19 people', which misinterprets the data (likely representing hours, not people). The overview is present but lacks clarity due to these misinterpretations. The response fails to make meaningful comparisons between the groups, instead listing figures in a repetitive manner. To improve, focus on accurately interpreting the units of measurement and grouping data points to highlight trends rather than listing every figure.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'In contrast', 'Overall'), they are often followed by unclear or grammatically incorrect statements. The progression of ideas is mechanical, and the referencing is sometimes confusing, such as the transition between age groups. The paragraphing is present but does not effectively group the information to support a clear analysis of the data. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'people', 'accounted for', and 'using'. There are several spelling errors, such as 'indivudals' and 'verious'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe data trends, opting for simple phrases like 'decreased sharply' or 'at the end'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate a wider range of vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuate', 'peak at', 'a significant decline', or 'the majority of'. Precision in word choice is essential for describing statistical information accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement, article usage, and prepositional phrases (e.g., '11 to 15 age in female 6 people'). Sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at complex sentences are often faulty or awkward. Punctuation is also inconsistent. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that prepositions are used correctly when describing data. Reducing the number of errors in basic structures is necessary before attempting more complex grammatical forms.
