Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table compares the average hours spent on the Internet by different age groups of Male and Female in Europe.

Overall, the eye catching feature is that in the age group of 16-20, the Males and Females invested the maximum time on the Internet. However, the time spent on the Internet was the least by the Males and Females in age group of 51+.

In the age group of 16-20, 19 Males and 18 Females were using Internet, which is approximately 10% and 6% higher as compared to 2 Males and 3 Females respectively in the age group of 51+. The second highest time was invested by the age group of 11-15, consisting of 8 Males and 6 Females.

This was followed by the age group of 21-25, where 7 Males and 5 Females were active on the Internet. An equilibrium was achieved by the age group of 26-30 with 4 Males and Females each. At last, the second lowest time was given on the Internet by the age group of 31-50, with 3 Males and 4 Females.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response provides a clear overview and identifies the main trends, such as the highest usage in the 16-20 age group and the lowest in the 51+ category. However, the analysis of the data is flawed. The student attempts to calculate percentage differences (e.g., '10% and 6% higher') which are not supported by the raw data provided in the table. Furthermore, the description of the data is somewhat repetitive, and the comparison between groups lacks depth. To improve, focus on accurately reporting the figures provided rather than attempting complex calculations that may lead to inaccuracies. Ensure that all data points mentioned are clearly linked to the specific age groups and genders to avoid confusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from the highest usage groups to the lower ones. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'This was followed by', and 'At last' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more precise. For instance, the phrase 'At last' is not the most natural choice for concluding a list of data points. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would help elevate the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the data clearly. Phrases like 'invested the maximum time' and 'active on the Internet' are relevant. However, there is some repetition of basic verbs like 'using' and 'given'. The use of 'invested' is slightly unnatural in this context; 'spent' or 'devoted' would be more appropriate. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'accounted for', 'represented', or 'fluctuated', rather than relying on simple descriptive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'Males and Females of different age groups of Male and Female' in the introduction, which is redundant. Additionally, '19 Males and 18 Females were using Internet' lacks the necessary article 'the'. There are also minor issues with preposition usage and pluralization. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
