Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table illustrates the information about the average hours spent on the internet by European people of 6 different age groups.
Overall, 16-20 years of male and female recorded the highest figure of internet usage whereas 51+ recorded the lowest while the remaining age groups recorded minor fluctuations between them for male and female.
To begin with, the age group of 11-15 recorded 8 males and 6 females. The figures increased to 19 males and 18 females for the age group of 16-20 making it the highest for any age group. Thereafter, there is decline in the figure of internet usage for the age group of 21-25 at just 7 males and 5 females respectively.
Furthermore, for age group 26-30 the count of male and female for using internet was similar. However, this pattern changed among the 31–50 age group, where females spent slightly more time online than males, at 4 and 3 hours respectively. A similar trend can be seen among those aged 51 and over, with females recording 3 hours compared with 2 hours for males.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response provides a clear overview of the main trends, identifying the peak usage in the 16-20 age group and the lowest in the 51+ category. You have selected relevant data points to support your descriptions. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by some inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, you mention a decline for the 21-25 age group, but the data provided in the prompt is not fully utilized to make deeper comparisons between the genders across all categories. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurately transcribed and that comparisons are more consistently integrated throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'However' to guide the reader through the information. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is grouped logically by age ranges. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the relationship between the sentences is always smooth, avoiding repetitive structures when moving from one age group to the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'decline', and 'trend' appropriately. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances where word choice could be more precise. For example, 'recorded the highest figure' is a bit repetitive. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' (e.g., 'surged', 'plummeted', 'marginal') and ensure collocations are natural. The current vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication required for the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as '16-20 years of male and female recorded' (should be 'males and females in the 16-20 age group') and 'there is decline' (missing an article: 'a decline'). Punctuation is generally correct, but some phrasing is slightly awkward, which occasionally interrupts the flow. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you reach a higher band.
