Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The provided table presents data regarding the average number of hours spent on the internet weekly by European males and females across six age brackets.

Overall, internet usage is highest among teenagers and young adults aged 16–20 and generally decreases with age for both genders. Additionally, males spend slightly more time online in younger age groupswhereas females exceed males in internet usage among older age brackets.

Individuals aged 16 to 20 recorded the highest internet consumption by a significant margin, with male spending 19 hours and females spending 18 hours per week. Children aged 11–15 also spent notable time online, average 8 hours for males and 6 hours for females. However, usage drops noticeably in the 21–25 bracket, declining to 7 hours for males and 5 hours for females

For older age groups, the internet usage continues to go downward. Among 26–30 year-olds, both men and women spend an average of 4 hours weekly online. In the 31–50 age group, female usage remains steady at 4 hours, whereas male usage falls to 3 hours. Finally, those aged 51 and above spend the least time online, with males averaging just 2 hours per week compared to 3 hours for females.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selected relevant data points to support your summary. The comparison between genders across different age groups is well-handled, particularly the observation regarding the shift in usage patterns as age increases. The data is accurate and the report is well-structured, covering all age brackets mentioned in the table. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently highlight the most significant differences rather than listing every single data point, though your current approach is already quite effective for a clear summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'For older age groups' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the information. The flow is natural and the relationship between the different age groups is clearly articulated. There is a minor issue with spacing in 'groupswhereas' and 'noticeably in', which slightly affects the presentation, but the overall structure remains coherent and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately. Phrases like 'internet consumption', 'by a significant margin', and 'declining to' demonstrate a good command of language suitable for an academic report. There is some repetition of the word 'usage', which could be improved by using synonyms such as 'activity', 'engagement', or 'time spent'. While the vocabulary is adequate and precise, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or varied descriptors would help elevate the response to a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free and communication is clear. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'average 8 hours' (should be 'averaging 8 hours') and 'male spending' (should be 'males spending'). Additionally, there are some minor punctuation and spacing errors, such as the missing space in 'groupswhereas' and the double space after 'noticeably'. Despite these small slips, your control over grammar is generally strong, and the errors do not impede the reader's understanding of the data.
