IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table illustrates the mean number of hours spent on the internet by European males and females in six different age groups.

Overall, people who are in the age of 16-20 spent most of the time on the internet. While those aged 51 and above spent the least time on the web. In most of the age groups, males uses the net for longer than the females but the age group of 31-50 are the opposite because the number of females are greater in it.

Looking at the younger age groups, males aged 11-15 spent an average of 8 hours online compared with 6 hours for females. Web use then increased dramatically among those aged 16-20, reaching 19 hours for males and 18 hours for females, the highest figures in the table for using the internet. However among 21-25 years old, usage of web declines to 7 hours for men and 5 hours for women.

For the older people, internet use continues to decrease. Both males and females aged 26-30 spent 4 hours online on an average. Among 31-50 year people, females recorded slightly higher usage than males at 4 hours compared with 3 hours. Finally, people aged 51 an the above had the lowest with males spending 2 hours ad females 3 hours on internet.
