Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While you have attempted to report data for different age groups, the response lacks a clear overview of the main trends or significant differences. You have listed data points mechanically without grouping them effectively or highlighting the most striking features, such as the peak usage in the 16-20 age bracket. Furthermore, there is confusion in the terminology, as you switch between 'internet' and 'mobile phones' inconsistently. To improve, ensure you provide a summary paragraph that identifies the overall pattern and ensure all data is accurately attributed to the correct category.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is presented as a single, dense paragraph, which makes it difficult to follow. There is a lack of logical progression; the information is presented as a list of facts rather than a cohesive report. Cohesive devices are used in a very repetitive and mechanical way, such as the frequent use of 'whereas' and 'on the other hand'. The punctuation is also problematic, with several run-on sentences and comma splices, such as '...mobile phones, The second age group...'. To improve, use clear paragraphing to separate the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, and vary your linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic phrases like 'spend... hours on' and 'age group'. There is also a lack of precision regarding the subject matter; you refer to 'mobile phones' when the prompt specifies 'Internet' usage, which suggests a misunderstanding of the data. There is no attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary or synonyms to describe the data trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'declined'). To improve, focus on using precise terminology related to data description and avoid repeating the same sentence structures throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'males spend' vs 'males spent') and inconsistent tense usage. The sentence structure is largely repetitive, consisting mostly of simple clauses joined by commas. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the punctuation is consistently weak, particularly the use of commas where full stops are required. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring consistent tense usage, and learning how to use full stops to separate independent ideas.
