Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given table provides information regarding the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.

Overall, the bulk of spent went to male while female receive minimal attention. Notable difference exist between the ages in terms of priorities.

Firstly, with regard to age of male, this category accounted for the largest share in groups of 16-20 spent on the internet around 19 hours. By comparison, female age of group, this category slightly smaller to this area accounted around 18 hours spent on the internet. When it comes to 11-15 years, male groups devoted 8 hours of spent on the internet, which is slightly higher than the 6 hours on female.

In terms of average hours, male was significantly more than female. Male 21-25 years groups allocated 7 hours of their total spent on the internet, compared to just 5 hours on female. However, the lowest figure is 51+ age group of male allocated to 2 hours, where female groups spent on internet 3 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response provides an overview and selects key features from the data, such as the highest and lowest age groups. However, the summary is somewhat inaccurate; for instance, the claim that 'the bulk of spent went to male' is not consistently supported by the data provided, as the figures for females are often comparable or higher in certain brackets. The overview is also slightly confusing in its phrasing. While the main features are identified, the analysis lacks the precision required for a higher band, as some comparisons are vague or misinterpret the trends shown in the table.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'with regard to age of male' and 'by comparison, female age of group' are awkward and hinder the flow of information. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly when moving between age groups. While there is an attempt to use linking words, the lack of variety and the repetitive nature of the sentence structures make the text feel somewhat clunky and difficult to follow in places.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. The student frequently uses the phrase 'spent on the internet' or 'spent' as a noun, which is grammatically incorrect in this context. There is a lack of variety in reporting verbs and comparative language. Words like 'bulk' and 'minimal' are used, but the overall range is narrow, and the misuse of word forms (e.g., 'spent' instead of 'time spent' or 'usage') indicates a lack of control over academic vocabulary. To improve, the student needs to focus on using more precise nouns and collocations related to data reporting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Notable difference exist') and awkward sentence construction (e.g., 'female age of group, this category slightly smaller to this area'). The use of articles and prepositions is inconsistent, and the sentence structures are largely simple or poorly formed complex sentences. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and syntax prevents the response from reaching a higher band. More attention to sentence structure and proofreading is necessary.
