Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response successfully covers all main parts of the task by reporting the key features and making relevant comparisons across different age groups. The overview paragraph accurately captures the main trends, such as teenagers spending the most time online and internet usage decreasing with age. Specific data points are cited to support the descriptions, for instance, noting that males aged 16 to 20 spent 19 hours and females 18 hours. However, there is a slight lack of precision in some data reporting and a tendency towards minor generalisation issues in sentence structure, but the core requirements of Task 1 are adequately fulfilled. Therefore, this performance aligns closely with Band 6.0 descriptors where all parts are addressed and main trends are highlighted.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and an overview. The student attempts to sequence ideas logically, starting with an overview, moving to younger groups, and concluding with older groups. However, cohesion is frequently faulty or mechanical. Expressions like 'Looking first at the younger groups' and 'Turning to the older groups' attempt to structure the text, but awkward referencing and run-on phrasing hamper logical progression. For example, sentences such as 'teenager whose age 11 to 15 they are used internet average' disrupt the flow and make relationships between ideas less clear. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion requires better control, placing this response firmly in Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully conveying basic statistical information using terms such as 'average', 'web', 'males', and 'females'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary and phraseology, but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice and formation, such as 'average of spent hours' instead of 'average number of hours spent', and 'internet usages is decreased'. While these lexical inaccuracies and repetitive structures occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader, communication of the data remains generally possible. This meets the criteria for Band 5.0, where lexical range is limited yet minimally adequate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writing exhibits a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside poorly constructed complex forms. Frequent grammatical errors significantly impede readability and accuracy throughout the text. Examples include 'teenager spent most time' (missing articles and pluralisation), 'who is spent most of the time', and '26 to 30 aged citizens are spending average 4 hours'. Furthermore, tense usage is inconsistent, switching inappropriately between past and present forms when describing static chart data. Because attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty and persistent errors cause strain for the reader, a Band 5.0 score is appropriate for grammatical range and accuracy.
