Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses the main task by reporting key features and making appropriate comparisons across age groups and genders. The overview correctly identifies that teenagers spend the most hours on the internet and points out the similarity in the 26-30 age group. Specific data points are cited accurately from the table, such as males and females in the 16-20 bracket spending 19 and 18 hours respectively. However, the student includes personal speculation ('Mostly teenagers use internet for study material due to which it increased duration'), which is not presented in the source data and should be avoided in Academic Task 1. Despite this minor extraneous detail, all parts of the prompt are covered well, earning a band score of 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall progression and is divided into an introduction, an overview, and body sentences detailing the statistics. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'whereas', and 'At the end' are used to connect ideas, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is attempted, but the body of the essay is collapsed into a single block rather than being clearly structured into distinct logical paragraphs. Referencing is mostly clear, but occasional clunky phrasing like 'At the end people who are above the age of 51' disrupts the flow. These organisational and cohesive limitations place the response firmly in the band 6.0 category.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'average time', 'age groups', 'genders', and 'interval of time'. However, there are notable lexical and word-formation errors throughout the text, such as 'spend' instead of 'spent', 'duration on internet' instead of 'time spent on the internet', and 'ageing' instead of 'aged'. Less common lexical items are attempted but occasionally lack precision or appropriate collocation. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the response from achieving a higher band, making a score of 5.5 appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb tense and agreement, such as 'its is crystal clear', 'teenagers are the one who spend', and 'male have more hours spent on internet relatively female'. Punctuation is also weak, with run-on sentences and missing commas or full stops (e.g., 'female who have only 6 hours. whereas, male have 8 hours'). Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause strain for the reader, the grammar score is 5.0.
